Check the NFA rating printed on your vent's product spec sheet (manufacturers rate every vent by NFA, per the attic ventilation guide) — divide your Intake/Exhaust NFA above by that per-vent rating to get the number of vents needed. Example: if a soffit vent is rated at 0.5 sq ft (72 sq in) NFA, and you need 5 sq ft (720 sq in) intake NFA, you need 720/72 ≈ 10 vents.

Total NFA (sq ft) = Attic Floor Area ÷ Ratio Per IRC R806.2 (via IIBEC), you need 1 sq ft of Net Free Area for every 150 sq ft of attic floor (the 1/150 rule), or 1 sq ft per 300 sq ft when intake/exhaust are balanced 50/50 and a Class I or II vapor retarder is installed in cold climates.

Per IRC R806.2, you need 1 square foot of Net Free Area (NFA) for every 150 square feet of attic floor area (the 1/150 rule). You may use the reduced 1/300 ratio only when intake and exhaust are balanced 50/50 and, in cold climates, a Class I or II vapor retarder is installed on the warm side of the ceiling.
NFA is the actual open airflow space a vent provides, not its physical size. Manufacturers rate every vent by NFA — for example, a soffit vent might have a physical footprint far larger than its rated 0.5 sq ft NFA. Always use the spec-sheet NFA value printed on the product, never the vent's outer dimensions, when totaling your ventilation.
Only when two conditions are both met: intake and exhaust NFA are balanced 50/50, and — in cold climates (IRC Zones 6–8) — a Class I or II vapor retarder is installed on the warm side of the ceiling. Per IRC R806.2 and the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA), skipping either condition means your attic is under-ventilated relative to code even though 1/300 looks like less area is required.
This calculator gives you the required NFA in square inches, split between intake and exhaust. There is no universal 'number of vents' because NFA rating varies by manufacturer and product. Check the NFA printed on your specific vent's spec sheet, then divide your required intake or exhaust NFA by that per-vent rating.
Attic floor area, not the sloped roof surface area. The IRC R806.2 ratio (1/150 or 1/300) is measured against the flat square footage of the attic floor, so don't substitute your roof's pitched surface area — use the footprint of the attic space itself.
